#98 Mind Over Matter: Preparing for the year ahead. Do we need to check our ego?

There is nothing better than the promise of a fresh, new year.

I personally love this time as it prompts me to reflect, reassess and look at what I want my business to look like moving into the new year.

I know that a lot of business owners also like to reflect at this time of year, and I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about a common trap I see small business owners fall into, and that is making decisions from your ego.

During this period of reflection, we tend to look around at what others are doing in business and feel as if we don’t measure up. We look at others and feel like we should be further along and we can start to feel bad about ourselves. This is often our ego taking over and it causes us to make decisions out of alignment with our true purpose.

It's easy to get distracted by other people's successes or social media feeds that make them out to be more than they may actually be. We can fall into the trap of thinking that the same success should apply to us when we haven’t really assessed what our business actually needs, and what we need to be focusing on for ourselves.

So as we move into a new year, I want you to take some time to evaluate how your own ego is driving your decisions and actions.

Ask yourself these questions:

Is this decision in alignment with my personal goals?

Will this help me reach my desired outcome in business?

So often our egos will drive us down the wrong path but acknowledging its presence and its influence can help keep us on track with where we want to go in our businesses

Find a way to block out the noise for yourself, and keep the focus on your own achievements.

Here’s a glance at this episode:

  • [1:00]: In my background as a practising lawyer, a healthy dose of ego was necessary to feel as if you could advocate for the client effectively and a desire to win

  • [2:00]: Now operating in the world of small business, I’ve found it confronting to asses where my ego is influencing my business decisions too heavily

  • [3:05]: When moving into a new year, it’s important to assess where we are and also the role that ego plays in our business

  • [4:15: For me, I recognised that it was my ego that was causing me to move into overwhelm as I found myself comparing my business to others and I felt like I needed to be doing all the things

  • [5:10]: I want to prompt you to regularly go back and check in on the decisions that you’re making for your business, your why and where your north start is anchored to

  • [6:35]: At this time of year it’s also common to start saying “yes” to all the things ago and filling up your schedule - but if you want to grow sustainably, it might be necessary to scale it back

  • [8:00]: In my traditional legal practice, it was all too common for the relaxing break over the Christmas holidays to be all but forgotten within a few weeks of starting back for the new year. I was already strung out and back to the rat race. I don’t want to be a part of that narrative anymore.

  • [9:10]: I hope that this episode serves as a reminder to you. Slow down. Think about whether you’re making your decisions from your ego, or from your higher “why” and purpose.
