#46 In conversation with Rachel Rennie

Does creating an effective SEO strategy perplex you?

Is your content consistent across platforms?

I’m chatting today with the founder of Frankly Write, Rachel Rennie. Frankly Write is a copy and brand specialist company that provides services in branding, websites, SEO, and copy services. Rachel is my own copywriter, SEO specialist, and an absolutely integral part of my team. I first met Rachel through my business coach and I had my own preconceived ideas about what hiring a copywriter would entail.

Would they be able to understand my brand and my voice?

I have a rather unique brand as a lawyer without all of the jargon, so I was very doubtful in the beginning. But when I started reading Rachel’s content and website, I completely understood why it is so important to have a copywriter in my team and immediately wanted her to overhaul my entire website.

Rachel shares with us the process she goes through when learning a client’s authentic voice and brand values. I know from firsthand experience, the extensive questionnaire she has developed to learn everything about your personality. This data enables her to create consistency across your media and ensure content is in alignment with your brand voice strategy.

Rachel advises us to look for a vibe and a connection when searching for a copywriter. We finish up by discussing the best and worst business advice she has received and what she would tell her younger self.

Enjoy!

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[2:13]: Rachel explains how Frankly Write is a brand and copy studio. They make sure that brand voice is consistent across everything.

[3:21]: They also create strategies to generate organic SEO. They work mainly with technical and on-page SEO.

[4:11]: Rachel is an integral part of my team.

[5:13]: Every time Rachel runs an audit of my website, the numbers are increasing higher and higher.

[6:05]: I met Rachel as my business coach advised me to speak to a copywriter to work on my homepage. I had preconceived ideas about what a copywriter would do. But as I got to know Rachel’s website, I changed my mind to wanting to overhaul my entire website.

[8:00]: Rachel asks her clients many questions to get to know their voice. The first step is to have a big strategy session to talk about everything.

[9:48]: When you meet with a copywriter, you’ll know very quickly if you vibe together. Frankly Write has released a copy on their website of who their ideal clients are.

[11:10]: Design pulls a client in. The messaging is then what makes it a sale.

[12:15]: What’s the point of having a website if it’s not working for you?

[13:15]: We have the ‘bible’ in my business. The brand voice strategy document that Rachel prepared.

[13:30]: The strategy sessions brand your words. Takes your values as a business, turns them into online behaviours, and creates a brand personality with a voice and rules. Rachel then provides numerous tools to implement it.

[15:01]: Yes your copywriter will sound like you and you can ensure consistency with your brand voice strategy.

[15:52]: People have short attention spans and are not very forgiving. They will move to the next person if your brand isn’t consistent.

[16:13]: To find a copywriter, follow them on social media for a while. Have a feel if their vibe will resonate with you.

[17:25]: Rachel says when people write their own website copy it’s so obvious. If you don’t have the knowledge or experience, it won’t be copywriting. You can be an amazing writer but it won’t be copywriting.

[19:17]: Where to find Rachel.

[20:28]: The best business advice Rachel has come from many different people. Surround yourself with the right people.

[21:15]: The worst business advice Rachel received was when she worked for a company. She was told she had to change her management style to fit every single person in her team. You have to be you and build a team of people who love what you’re doing.

[22:46]: She would tell her younger self to: be yourself, trust yourself and your instincts.
