#84 Why I Hate Calling Myself A Lawyer

Why I hate calling myself a lawyer - Rise up in business podcast

I’m thrilled to be bringing you the first episode in Season 7 and I’m sharing something I’ve wanted to talk about for a long time. In this episode, I’m talking about why I genuinely hate calling myself a lawyer, and I don’t say that lightly.

The word ‘lawyer’ usually has some very negative connotations attached. From working in the industry for 20 years, I absolutely understand why a lot of people feel so strongly against lawyers and the attitudes they commonly hold. In fact, I rarely associate with lawyers outside of work!

In this episode, I share my journey in the industry and why I chose to step away from the traditional way of practicing law to start my own firm where my focus is to educate and empower my clients in a simple, honest and practical way.

When I first started practicing law, I wanted to change the world one client at a time. I quickly realised that if I wanted to be successful, I needed to commit my entire existence to work.

According to industry expectations, I reached success and I talk about how doing so led me to become stressed, overworked and overweight. I share more of this journey and how my perspective completely changed after the birth of my son, helping me discover what really matters in life and how I wanted to live it.

I’m so excited that I get to bring these episodes to you and work with my clients in a way that genuinely helps them. My goal here is to leave you feeling equipped with everything you need to set yourself up for success and feel protected, supported and empowered.

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[2:00]: I’ve been practicing law for 20 years and understand why business owners think so many terrible things about lawyers.

[3:20]: When I started law, I wanted to change the world one client at a time. I was thrown in the deep end and learned that if I wanted to be successful, I needed to commit my entire existence to work.

[5:00]: I met my husband and didn’t think I could fall pregnant and in hindsight, it was stress related. After my son was born, I told my business partner that I was never going back.

[6:15]: My values were no longer in sync with what the traditional law firms viewed as successful. I stepped out of law for 5 years and later on began to practise law in a way that suited me.

[7:50]: In 2019 I decided to launch a business that would lend itself to supporting me as a person and support clients to meet their needs. I was met with a lot of negativity.

[8:30]: I wanted to educate and empower clients to set themselves up but this wasn’t met well with many members in the profession.

[9:30]: I work remotely and take the time to listen and understand where my clients are at so I can provide tailored advice and enable my clients to feel supported, protected and empowered.

[10:50]: If you want to know what it’s like working with me, check out episode 83 with Alison Brown.

[11:15]: I have recently launched the Legally Empowered Entrepreneur Masterclass Series. This includes 5 key areas that I talk to clients about all the time and I’m so excited for this.
