#85 Let's talk about DIY Templates

Let's talk about DIY templates - Rise up in business

In today’s episode I dive into a topic I am asked about a lot - DIY legal documents. Are templates any good for legal documents? Can I use them?

People often turn to DIY spontaneously, because they don’t know how to approach getting professional help, they perceive it to be cheaper, or they don’t care enough to put time and money into it.

These are certainly not the reasons you should turn to DIY for your legal documents. I explore the reasons why.

Ultimately, your legal documents make up a significant part of your business’s risk mitigation strategy. I explain how not being across what you need to have in place and not being fully supported in how to implement and execute your legals sends a clear message to your clients. I also discuss the risk it exposes you to.

The way we deliver our genius to our clients is different. The way we operate internally is different. Accordingly, legal documents shouldn’t be cookie cutter or copy and paste jobs. There really is no substitute for properly prepared and tailored business legals that work for you and your business. However, It’s never too late to bring this to the top of your priorities list and take action. There is no judgment here.

My mission here is to share knowledge so that you are empowered, and you can move forward with confidence knowing that you are doing everything you can to build long-term, sustainable, and successful businesses.

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[00:45]: Today I dive into a topic that I am asked about a lot. That is DIY legal template documents. Are they any good?

[1:15]: My view is - DIY is for Bunnings, not for legals. Why do people do DIY? It’s often spontaneous, they don’t know where to start in terms of getting a professional, they often think it’s cheaper, or they don’t care enough about it to put serious time and effort into it.

[3:18]: We look at those points when it comes to your legals. Your legal documents are a critical part of your risk mitigation strategy as a business.

[5:12]: Cheaper? You need to look at cost, in terms of what it costs you to not have them done.

[5:43]: The fourth thing - not caring enough to put time and money into it - this makes my blood run cold when it comes to legals. You need to care about your legals - they are vital to the long term sustainability and success of your business.

[6:23]: Legal documents are a foundation to your business. If you were planning to build your house, imagine saying to your builder “go easy on the foundations mate”.

[7:29]: The same goes for your legal documents. If you take shortcuts, go light on clauses, have a template that only sort-of applies - you’re telling your clients that you don’t know a great deal about running a business.

[9:10]: DIY templates are long, onerous, underwhelming and often not understood.

[9:44]: There is no substitute for preparation in business and there are no shortcuts. There is no substitute for properly prepared and tailored business legals that work for you and your business.

[10:42]: When I say it depends - it depends on your priorities, your values and your level of respect for yourself and your clients.

[11:29]: There is no judgement here. When we know better we do better. And it’s never too late. Please reach out.

[12:35]: My mission for these episodes is for them to add value and to share knowledge so that people are empowered and they can move forward with confidence knowing they are doing all they can to build long-term, sustainable, successful businesses.
