#67 Working with a Business Coach, with Emma McQueen
Have you been playing with the idea of working with a business coach but don’t know what to look for?
The market is absolutely full of every type of business coach under the sun and it can be very difficult to know who will be a great fit for you before you outlay an investment.
To help you filter through the options, my guest today is Emma McQueen. Emma is an incredible business coach who works with women across industries and sectors, from those with their own businesses to women working in the professional services, corporate and not-for-profit sectors.
This episode explores what to look for in a business coach, where to start, and how to know if you’re aligned. After all, if there’s no fit - there’s no point. Emma shares her own process to ensure that her new clients will match her coaching style and how to know if the feeling just isn’t there.
Controversially, I also wanted to fill you in on what to do if you’ve engaged a business coach in 1:1 coaching for a fixed period of time and then decide you no longer want to work with them. Don’t worry, there are options!
This episode is full of value whether you’re looking for a new coach or deciding if your current coach relationship isn’t aligned the way you thought it would be. Emma shares all of her insight and experience to help you make your next decision and embark on your next exciting business journey.
TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:
[2:15]: Emma discusses how people work with a business coach. Emma does 1:1 coaching and a group coaching program ‘Thriving Women’ that incorporates a 1:1 element. Emma loves doing 1:1 and wants to get deep with her clients.
[3:52]: Emma’s strengths are in relationships.
[4:30]: Emma talks about where people start when they’ve decided they want to hire a business coach. Emma likes to have a call with people. Consider, do they have the skills? The experience? Do they work with similar clients? And am I clear on what I need coaching in?
[8:14]: If there’s no fit, there’s no point.
[8:58]: Use of language or what you want out of a coaching experience is a good indicator of whether you’ll fit. Your coach isn’t going to do everything for you.
[10:25]: Just because you book in for a call with somebody doesn’t mean you’re obligated to work with them.
[11:44]: Understand what drives the coach and what drives you - is it aligned?
[12:47]: Growth is uncomfortable.
[13:45]: I’ve had new matters come across my desk from clients that have signed up with coaches 1:1 for a fixed period, then decided they don’t want to work with them and the coach says ‘no’.
[15:25]: Emma doesn’t work with anyone for less than 12 months. But, the 12 month contract states if you don’t want to continue for any reason, have a conversation with Emma, give 30 days' notice and then you’re out.
[17:20]: Emma sees her job as the coach is to provide value. She doesn’t let herself off the hook after 1 month.
[19:25]: If you’ve had a bad experience with a coach it doesn’t mean they’re all like that. There’s always going to be an exit strategy.
[20:33]: There are so many coaches out there. It can present a big problem when there are so many promising they can deliver what you need. You have to do your due diligence. Coach first, business second.
