#95 Time to take stock, & think 2023 strategy

This week I want to talk about strategy and planning for 2023. I love a good strategy. And there is no substitute for preparation. This applies to so many aspects of life and certainly to many parts of running a business.

This time of year can be a really wonderful opportunity to pause, take stock and reflect on the year that’s been. This allows us to uncover the lessons from the year and understand where the real value was in our business journey across the year.

My starting place for planning is always looking back, being mindful and identifying what worked and what didn’t work. Taking a gentle and compassionate look at the year that’s been can be really empowering. I really love the start of anything new. It feels like a clean slate.

I share the five questions to ask yourself when you’re reflecting on the year that has been and put your strategy together for 2023. This helps me understand the lessons from the year, including where I’ve strayed from my ‘why’.

Nothing stays the same forever. When I inject fluidity into my plan, I find it really refreshing and empowering. It gives me permission, to be honest, and understand what’s really going on in my business, I reflect without judgement.

I also explain how I do my planning in quarters and the software I use. I share a declaration that has been really powerful in my planning and strategy development: I don’t do overwhelm. It’s been a game-changer. Having fierce boundaries has helped make sure overwhelm is no longer part of my life.

We can’t achieve our goals and objectives if we don’t know what they are and we don’t have a map or a pathway to get there.

I hope this inspires you to take what you have learnt from the year that’s been, incorporate that into a planning process and build a strategy for the next year in your business.

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

  • [1:10]: There is no substitute for preparation. I learnt that from highly established and credentialed Barrister however it absolutely applies to life and certainly to many parts of running a business.

[1:47]: This time of year can be really wonderful to pause, take stock and reflect on the year that’s been. It can feel really lovely to allow ourselves the space to sit, reflect and get some clarity. You become crystal clear where the real value lies in the past year of your business journey.

  • [3:00]: My starting place for planning is always looking back, being mindful and identifying what worked and what didn’t work. Take a gentle and compassionate look at the year that’s been can be really empowering. I really love the start of anything new. It feels like a clean slate.

  • [4:18]: I love the freshness and promise of hope and possibility that planning for a new year brings. I share the five questions to ask yourself when you’re putting your strategy together for 2023.

  • [6:01]: It’s only after sitting with these five points that I can plan for going forward and I can know what I want to achieve in the following year.

  • [8:25]: I do my planning in quarters. What has been really powerful in my planning and strategy development is a declaration I made: I don’t do overwhelm.

  • [10:50]: Part of not doing overwhelm is fierce boundaries. This has helped me immensely with my planning.

  • [11:55]: I am compassionate and kind to myself, I manage my expectations, block out the noise and busyness, am anchored to my why, accept I don’t do overwhelm and set my team and business up for success in 2023.

  • [12:55]: We can’t achieve our goals and objectives if we don’t know what they are and we don’t have a map or a pathway to get there. It’s not rigid - I take time to reflect monthly and quarterly and tweak where necessary.

  • [13:34]: Accepting that things won’t always go according to plan, and that they should’t, is powerful.

  • [13:50]: I hope this inspires you to take what you have learnt from the year that’s been, incorporate that into a planning process and build a strategy for the next year in your business.
