#55 The right bookkeeper can be a game changer, with Lisa Turner

Do you do your own bookkeeping?

When first starting out, most business owners tend to do their own books, but I get really excited when businesses reach that turning point where there’s finally room in the budget to begin outsourcing. And let me tell you, finding the right bookkeeper can be a game changer for your business.

Today I’m chatting with my incredible bookkeeper, Lisa Turner from Accounted For You. Lisa has been instrumental in growing my business. Surrounding yourself with the right people to support you is absolutely vital.

In this episode, Lisa shares her advice for finding the right bookkeeper who suits you and your business, some questions to ask, and things to bear in mind. We also discuss why a lot of business owners are hesitant to outsource and whether or not doing your own books is really saving you money.

I’m certain this episode will bring a lot of value to you, especially if you’re at the point where you’re considering outsourcing your bookkeeping. My advice? Go for it!

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[2:00]: A lot of business owners hold off outsourcing to a bookkeeper due to budget concerns or not knowing it will help them.

[3:15]: Bookkeeping is really easy if you don’t know what you’re doing and really complex if you do. Some business owners don’t want to outsource because they think it’s easy to do themselves but it doesn’t mean they’re doing it all correctly.

[5:00]: It can take 3-4 times longer to fix errors if it’s been done wrong in the past. It’s a classic case of ‘we don’t know what we don’t know’.

[7:00]: When looking for a bookkeeper, you need to know if they are a BASS agent or a tax agent. Make sure they know your industry and you know the way they work will work for you and your business.

[8:10]: Some people say they are bookkeepers but they aren’t BAS agents. Lisa clarifies the difference and what you need to keep in mind.

[9:40]: Tracey has found the right fit with Lisa as her bookkeeper and her accountant. The value in business comes when you surround yourself with the right people.

[11:10]: Lisa reaches out to her client’s tax agents so they can begin collaborating.

[12:20]: Don’t go with someone just because someone else uses them and go with your gut. Do your own research, have a discovery call to make sure they suit you and don’t just go by price because you get what you pay for.

[13:00]: Where to find Lisa.
