#41 In conversation with Becky Hughes
I engaged a fantastic designer and copywriter for my rebranding process and even with these fabulous people in my corner, the process was still somewhat daunting. Had I known there was such a thing as a Brand Mentor to help me navigate the rebranding process, I wouldn’t have hesitated to engage their assistance at the time.
My conversation today is with Becky Hughes, a Brand Mentor who works with her clients to help navigate the sometimes complicated and demanding process of branding. As a designer herself, Becky takes an objective approach to help her clients understand the nuances involved in the branding process and close the gap between designers and business owners.
In this episode, Becky talks about the importance of brand guardianship and why it’s so important to take care of your brand. She shares some key ways to help do this including taking ownership of your assets, being consistent, and ensuring everything from your communications to your web forms are of the highest quality.
I really enjoyed this conversation with Becky and I know it’s going to add so much value to you and your business.
TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:
[2:00]: I landed with a fabulous designer and copywriter when I rebranded but had I known there was such a thing as a brand mentor, I would have jumped at it
[2:55]: Becky describes what she does as a brand mentor. There can be a disconnect between the business owner and the creative they choose to engage with and Becky helps them navigate the process.
[4:10]: Becky is objective in the process and not trying to push a creative solution, understanding both sides of the coin.
[5:20]: Brand guardianship is looking after your brand and giving it the attention it deserves. A brand has value attached to it and the more you’ve looked after it, the more value it will retain.
[7:15]: Take ownership of your assets. A lot of people go through the branding or rebranding process and don’t have copies of their hi res logos and images or know where their website is hosted etc.
[9:20]: You’ll always need to come back to your logos and if you don’t have the vector image, you’ll be in a tight spot. Ask yourself: “do I own and have access to all of the assets of my brand?”
[10:55]: Be really clear on what you’re going to get from the designer when you go through your branding process
[11:30]: Consistency is important. A lot of people get bored with their brand because they see it every day but you should resist the temptation to change things up.
[13:00]: Have really clear brand guidelines so that when you outsource web development, social media etc. the brand doesn’t get watered down.
[14:00]: Quality is so important. Make sure that everything is great quality across the board including communications, customer experience, website forms etc.
[16:10]: You can have great designer branding or poor designer branding and they cost the same thing.
[17:00]: The best business advice Becky received was to say no to things.
[17:50]: The worst business advice Becky received was to say yes to everything. Sometimes these things become barriers to growth because you’re stuck in things that don’t serve you.
[19:00]: Becky’s advice to her younger self: get out there, be brave, show your face and don’t care what everyone thinks of you
