Starting a small business? Set up for success from your home office
First of all, congratulations! You’ve decided to take the plunge to start a small business and I’m sure it’ll be so worth it. Although there are many celebrations involved in this early stage, there are also many unknowns. Because of this, we need to make the most of the things we do have some sort of control over – & this includes our home office.
For many of us these days, a brand new business means working from home for the first time. I’ve learnt that putting some thought into creating the right environment for productivity and joy can go a long way in long term happiness, fulfilment and success. I strongly believe that the hard work and late nights spent creating something that is yours should be supported by an amazing physical environment.
Once you have your business legals and business structure sorted (obviously!) – the most important first steps you can learn more about in our business legals blog post , or our recent business structures podcast episode – here are 4 key suggestions for maintaining a nurturing home office environment:
1.Design your space
Creating a space that welcomes you each day and invites you to feel calm, happy and perseverant is a key element in setting up for success and maintaining mental health. I’m under no impression however that we all have that spare room waiting to be cleared to use as an office! We have to make do with the space we have. Based on what some of our clients do, here are some ideas of how to create a beautiful environment include:
Setting aside a designated space for yourself – whether it is a corner of the living room, bedroom or even an area of the garage! Having a special space that you know is yours, and for your business can kick your brain into gear and assure you that there is an element of control.
Adding touches of beauty – a simple flower, thoughtful stationary and some photographs can all add to creating a warm environment to work in.
Eliminating distractions – keep the space as minimally distracting as possible by removing distracting objects and technology.
Sourcing the right equipment – do you need an ergonomic office chair? Is it helpful to you to have a standing desk or even a specific type of headset? Although these items are an investment, investing in an efficient and safe set up will serve you in the long run.
2. Maintain your long term vision
There are days when running a business is just plain hard – I get it. The obstacles and forced growth are the tough reality of doing something that is rewarding. Having a long term vision can pull us through the rougher times. Losing sight of where we’re going can lead to more stress and a loss of drive.
One way to keep ourselves on track is to have symbolic reminders or mementos in the home office space. Vision boards, collages, photographs or special objects can take us back to the decision that started our business or remind us of something special. I keep a photo of my grandmother on my desk. Her life story of hard work and strength inspires me to keep going in all of my endeavours.
3. Create space for reflection
Working should be more than sitting at the computer. We all need moments to think and allow our creative brains to kick into action. Creating a small amount of space in your home office to relax your mind can work wonders in a busy stressful day. Try some cushions on the floor, a nice candle and maybe some essential oils. It’ll provide the relief in moments of intensity.
4. Begin with Routine
Many entrepreneurs and successful folk attribute their success to a morning routine, in a consistent space. Starting your day focused and aligned can make the rest of the day so much easier. Some ideas for a strong morning routine including exercise, journaling and meditation. I personally spend 30 minutes a day journaling to get out all of my feelings so that my mind is clear for a productive day. I find it helps me focus, and keeps me on track.
It definitely takes effort and forward planning to care for the ‘future you’ – the one that’s sitting all day in an office, answering client e-mails and working hard on your new business. But trust me - that future you will thank you immensely if you put some thought and energy in creating a home office space deserving of your brand new business endeavour.
